Filippi Focus | BUCS Regatta 2025

Filippi had a storming weekend at BUCS Regatta 2025, taking 34% of all silverware available and ending the event as the most successful boatbuilder by medals won. In an event touted as the student national championships, with dozens of clubs descending on Nottingham in the hope of winning some coveted silverware ahead of the lead-in to Henley Women’s and Royal Regattas, Filippi emerged as the choice of champions once again with 47 medals in total.

Friday saw us collect eight podium placements, starting with silver in the open beginner single whilst riding with Queen’s University Belfast. A gold and a bronze followed in the third A-final of the day, as Durham University took the win in the open intemediate double, with Bath University in third.

The open championship double saw us win silver with Queen’s University Belfast before the Northern Irish club won us a second gold of the day in the open championship lightweight double. The following race for the women’s intermediate lightweight quad saw Filippi shells take gold and silver thanks to the University of Birmingham and Cambride University respectively.

In the last A-final of the first day, Durham University took silver in the open championship coxless four, narrowly trailing the University of London in gold but clear of Edinburgh University in third.

15 medals were claimed on the Saturday, starting with silver and bronze in the day’s opening A-final. Both went to Queen’s University Belfast, who were beaten out of the victory by Imperial College. In the following race, Konan Pazzaia took bronze in the open championship single behind Matt Long of Reading and Filip-Matej Pfeifer of Oxford Brookes.

In the weekend’s principal open event – the championship eight – Filippi were in silver whilst riding with Durham University, who saw off the close attentions of fierce local rivals from Newcastle University in a race won once again by Oxford Brookes.

In the open championship lightweight single, Filippi took gold and silver as Nottingham University’s Lucas Salmon took the win ahead of Jack Norton of Bath University. The next category saw Filipi win yet another gold, as Ben Furley of Bath University took the win over two Reading University athletes, the second of whom (Robbie Collen) was also in a Filippi.

In the open intermediate eight, we secured bronze with Durham University before matching that result in the open intermediate lightweight pair with Queen’s University Belfast. A silver in the women’s beginner quad followed (Queen’s University Belfast) before silver and bronze was secured in the women’s championship pair via two Durham University outfits.

Our final two medals of the day came in the women’s championship lightweight double, with Reading University taking bronze, and the women’s intermediate quad, where Reading took the top prize ahead of Newcastle and Edinburgh.

12 medals were won on the Sunday, with the day starting strongly as Queen’s University Belfast took bronze in the open beginner double in the first A-final of the day. Bronze followed in the open championship coxed four with Durham University before the same club took silver in the final of the open championship quad. Bronze was collected in the open intermediate quad with Reading University before we secured gold and bronze in the women’s beginner coxed four (Queen’s University Belfast in gold and Cambridge University in bronze).

In the premier women’s event of the weekend – the championship eight – we matched our open result by claiming silver with the University of London. A flurry of Filippi medals followed, starting with the women’s championship lightweight single, where we won every available medal. Hazel Wake of Oxford University took gold ahead of Ava Robertson of Glasgow Caledonian in silver and Erin Meredith of Birmingham University in bronze.

In the following final, Filippi shells finished in silver and bronze as Cambridge University placed second and Birmingham University were third.

Monday saw us collect 12 medals to round off a spectacular weekend of competition. We took silver in the open beginner quad with Queen’s University Belfast before winning gold in the next race with Birmingham University dominating the women’s intermediate lightweight pair. Gold also came in the women’s beginner eight with Queen’s University Belfast before a bronze was secured in the women’s intermediate double with Bath University.

The second Filippi lockout of the weekend occured in the women’s championship double, as Reading University collected the gold and silver medals with Bath University in bronze. For Finnola Stratton, it was her third gold medal of the weekend after also winning the championsip single and quad. The open intermediate lightweight quad was also won by Filippi as Queen’s University Belfast continued their superb weekend of racing to finish first.

The open intermediate pair was won by Bath University in a Filippi shell before Durham University managed a silver in the open championship pair. In the last A-final of the weekend, Filippi shells crossed in first and second as Durham University collected the last available gold, with the University of London in silver.

As evidenced by the sheer number of medals, Filippi remains the pre-eminent name in student racing here in the UK. We cannot wait to support these athletes over the remainder of the season.
