Despite challenging weather conditions, the 2024 edition of the Women’s Head of the River Race went ahead (admittedly with slight alterations to crew allowance) and opened the final act of the 23/24 head season. Filippi had another excellent day on the Tideway, enjoying three top-ten finishes and numerous boats across the top 50 competitors.
Our fastest finisher came courtesy of Thames Rowing Club, who secured third place overall, some 12 seconds back on headship winners from Leander Club. Under the guidance of Tom Mapp, Thames have established themselves as the queens of the club rowing scene and although this boat were racing in the open category, they secured the ‘Club’ pennant and will be eyeing a tilt at the Remenham and Wargrave Challenge Cups this summer.
Our next highest placing was via Molesey Boat Club, who stormed into the top-ten with a brilliant performance; their battle with Thames Rowing Club for summer supremacy will be a fascinating narrative to observe. Cambridge University were seventh overall and won the ‘University’ pennant in strong style. The Light Blues are gearing up for The Boat Race, which will take place in just under three weeks time, and this race provides valuable preparation as they look to secure their seventh win in a row.
Durham University were 12th overall, losing out narrowly to local rivals from Newcastle University. The contest for northern bragging rights – and a tilt at the Island Challenge Cup – will be one to watch as Rob Dauncey winds his program up to the apex of the season. Thames Rowing Club ‘E’ were 21st overall, having started 25th, and demonstrated the impressive depth of the Putney-based outfit, who managed to secure five eights inside the top 25. Less than two seconds behind were Tideway Scullers School, who continue to punch above their weight on the domestic circuit.
We look forward to supporting all of our crews in the summer months and are excited to watch a fantastic season of racing unfold.
