Filippi Focus | GBRT November U19 Trials 2024

Filippi followed up on a category win at the Senior GBRT Trials with a blistering set of results at the U19 equivalent, including a category win and numerous top-ten finishes. As one of the UK’s leading junior boat-builders across all relevant categories – from singles up to eights – this was another example of the depth of our support for a range of young athletes budding for international representation.

On the men’s side, Max Fullman of Wycliffe College Boat Club took the overall win by just over a second in front of Joe Wellington of the Windsor Boys School. Max – racing in a Filippi – is picking up where his sister left off, who earned junior international honours in 2023 when competing at the Coupe De La Jeunesse.

We also had two further athletes in the top five; Jonathan Miles and Patrick Wild of St Paul’s School finished third and fifth, respectively. Bobby Thatcher’s programme continues to go from strength to strength off the back of a season where his top crew took victories at the Head of the Charles, Schools’ Head of the River, National Schools’ Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. After retaining their title in Boston a few weeks ago, both of these athletes will now look to solidify their spot at the sharp end of the squad. Inside the top 15 was also Wilder Daffey of St Paul’s School

On the women’s side, we secured positions #2, #3 and #4 in a stunning showing for Filippi athletes. In a division won comfortably by Catherine Gardner of Hartpury College, our fastest athlete was Emily Nicholas of Sir William Perkins, who was three seconds clear of Amelia Westbrook of Shiplake College, who in turn was just over five seconds ahead of Jess Kerbiriou of the Tideway Scullers School. All three athletes raced in Filippi shells and already have GB representation under their belts from the summer of 2024.

Isobel Jeans of Headington School finished sixth, 0.1 seconds behind her crew-mate Sophie. Hannah Scott of Wallingford Rowing Club placed 11th overall.

Filippi are delighted to see so many athletes racing our shells to top-level finishes across the UK. The standard of competition is rising every year and all of these young rowers will now have their sights set on the February trials, where a pecking order will begin to form. We look forward to continuing to support clubs, schools and their charges in pursuing their ambitions across the sport.
